What it does
Keeps a fridge, router and phones running through a winter storm outage: 1,024 Wh, 1,800 W output, takes extra batteries.
NOAA's forecast: El Niño is under way and expected to peak this winter. The El Niño Advisory was issued 10 Sep 2026; the next NOAA update is due 8 Oct 2026. The map shows every active NWS alert, wildfire and earthquake in the US right now.
A strong El Niño winter means more storms across the southern states and more power cuts. Power first, then the heat that tends to follow the summer after.

An El Niño is under way and NOAA expects it to peak this winter. The El Niño Advisory was issued 10 Sep 2026. The full picture, every NOAA index and what it means for the summer after, is on the El Niño 2026–27 tracker.
It shifts the odds, not the day. In a strong El Niño winter the southern tier of the US tends to run wetter and stormier, and the northern tier milder. No single alert, fire or quake on this map is caused by it. State by state history is on the tracker; Utah has its own page.
NOAA CPC issues its El Niño discussion once a month. The last one was 10 Sep 2026; the next is due 8 Oct 2026. Every update is logged, dated, on the updates page.
Alerts, fires and earthquakes are read from the agencies by this page. The (i) button on the map shows when each read happened and whether it worked. If a read fails, that layer says so and shows the last good read with its age. The season tiles hold the values NOAA CPC published on the dates shown on each tile.
NOAA puts out an El Niño update once a month. We'll email you when it does and tell you what changed. Unsubscribe any time.
