Off-grid, camping, van, no outlet

Why this one
Real compressor cooling on battery power. Still vents through a duct — no rigid window kit needed.
No portable air conditioner works without a hose: cooling has to send heat somewhere. Every “hoseless AC” is an evaporative cooler, a spot cooler, or a vented unit in disguise. Below: the four honest workarounds, with dated prices.

Before you compare compressor units, get the cooling capacity roughly right — an oversized AC short-cycles and leaves the room clammy; an undersized one runs flat-out and never catches up. This applies ENERGY STAR's published sizing table and its four official adjustment rules, and shows you the math. (Evaporative coolers are rated in airflow, not BTU — for those, use the CFM sizing tool.)
A compressor air conditioner doesn't create cold — it moves heat from inside the room to somewhere else. If a unit sits entirely inside your room with no duct, the heat it pumps out the back cancels the cold it blows out the front. That's why the "is it a scam?" articles exist. It isn't quite a scam; it's three different product categories sold under one misleading label:
The whole evaporative category lives or dies on one number: your humidity. Below roughly 50%, a swamp cooler genuinely cools; above 60%, it mostly makes a muggy room muggier. Rather than guess, check your actual conditions — this runs the National Weather Service formula and gives you a straight yes or no. If the answer is no and you just need to feel cooler, a good bladeless or tower fan moves enough air to take the edge off in humid heat, without adding a drop of moisture.
Most "no window" rooms have more options than they look like they do. A sliding door takes a 95-inch door vent panel (roughly $40–50). A vertical slider or casement window takes a $39.99 TURBRO slide kit. Offices with drop ceilings can route a duct up through a tile, though the purpose-built kits (Kwikool's CK-12S, $299 as of 2026-07-04) are commercial gear that's currently special-order only. Any of these plus an ordinary single-hose portable AC will beat every product on this page at actually lowering the room temperature — for less money than the "ventless" units cost.
If you rent and worry about the landlord: the vent panels install without screws or drilling and come out in minutes. That covers the sliding-window case too — we wrote a separate fit-first guide for sliding and casement windows.

The best of the battery-portable class — real 6,100 BTU compressor cooling that can run entirely off-grid. But be clear about what you're buying: cooling mode requires the included insulated exhaust duct vented out a window, tent flap or van slider. The only mode that runs fully ductless is dehumidify, which drains into an internal tank and doesn't cool the air.
Skip it if: you want set-and-forget room cooling in a house with power — a normal portable AC with a vent kit does that job for a third of the money.

The one genuine hose-free compressor unit on the market — and the honesty test every competitor page fails: with no hose attached it cools the air aimed at you while the room itself stays net-neutral, like a fridge with the door open. Fine for a desk or bedside; useless for lowering room temperature. It's also sold out everywhere as of July 2026, with restock expected late 2026 or early 2027.
Skip it if: you need to cool a room rather than a person, or you need something you can actually order this season.
Sold out at Coolzy, Walmart and Amazon as of 2026-07-04; Coolzy says restock late 2026 / early 2027. Price may change at restock.

The honest budget answer for a desk in a dry climate. It's an evaporative cooler: a fan blowing air through a wet cartridge. In Phoenix it will drop the air in front of you noticeably; in Houston it will mostly add humidity to a humid room.
Skip it if: you live anywhere humid, or you expect it to change the temperature of a room.
Evaporative cooling adds humidity and fades fast in humid air — see the humidity section before buying.

The room-scale version of the same idea: 1,300 CFM of evaporative cooling that can genuinely handle up to 500 square feet — in a dry climate. It's the honest garage-and-patio pick for the Southwest and a poor choice east of the 100th meridian.
Skip it if: you're in a humid climate — an evaporative cooler there is a fan that makes the room damper.
Sold as MC18M / MC18MT (Ice Blue) / MC18V (Green) — same 1,300 CFM platform. Sylvane had the base MC18M at $189 in stock as of 2026-07-12; variant prices at other retailers still spread roughly $140–215.

Not glamorous, but this $39.99 panel is the highest-value item on this page: it turns the portable AC you can buy anywhere into a properly vented setup for vertical sliders and casement windows, 11 to 61 inches.
Skip it if: your window opening is under 11 inches or over 61 inches — measure before ordering.
Bought direct from TURBRO's own store, $39.99 in stock as of 2026-07-12. A 5.9-in hose version (707-90-062) also exists — measure your hose coupler first.

The permanent fix, for people who own their walls. A DIY mini-split solves the venting problem forever: 9,000 BTU, 17.5 SEER2 efficiency, no window involvement at all. The line set comes pre-charged, so a handy owner can install it without an HVAC visit.
Skip it if: you rent, or 'DIY' for you doesn't include a 3-inch hole through the side of the house.
Pre-charged 11.5 ft quick-connect line set, no vacuum pump needed — but it does require an exterior-wall penetration. Owners only, not renters. Don't confuse it with MRCOOL's pricier DIY 5th Gen E-Star line — different product. (We don't earn a commission on this one — the link is for price comparison only.)
If the WAVE 3 or a fan is going camping with you, size the battery to the load. The WAVE 3 draws about 690 W in cooling mode, so a 1,024 Wh EcoFlow DELTA 3 ($599, as of 2026-09-21) buys roughly an hour and a quarter at full tilt — realistic overnight use means eco mode, the add-on battery, or the 2,048 Wh DELTA 3 Max ($879; note EcoFlow also sells a separate higher-output "Max Plus"). A full wattage-and-runtime guide is coming; meanwhile our portable AC for camping guide covers the battery and power-station side of the same problem. If you'd rather compare brands, BLUETTI's AC180 ($499) and AC200L ($899) sit right alongside those two DELTA stations at similar capacities.
